Journey of Employment
SourceAmerica, Special Olympics Prep Athletes for Employment Success
SourceAmerica® and Special Olympics teamed up to present the Journey of Employment job fair in Seattle July 5-6 and on July 21 in Chicago. The Chicago event celebrated – among other things – the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics and was held as part of the Global Day of Inclusion at Soldier Field. The Seattle event took place during the Special Olympics USA Games.
The first stop on the journey was a short coaching session with employment experts from SourceAmerica and its network of nonprofits. Candidates learned tips on how to share their talents with potential employers, strengthen interview skills and gain career advice. Athletes then met with potential employers, such as Microsoft, Bank of America, Kaiser Permanente, Amazon, Boeing, Brooks Running Company, Starbucks, City of Seattle, King County, Walmart and more.
Job fair attendees also got the chance to hear from speakers throughout the events. Speaker panels were made up of employees and employers and highlighted a variety of perspectives on how to make the workplace a more inclusive environment for people with disabilities.
Special Olympics International Global Messenger and community relations specialist for SourceAmerica, David Egan, talked about the importance of Special Olympics being more than winning and receiving medals. "We're engaged in a movement that values people, a movement that helps us discover our talents… a movement that breaks down barriers and creates awareness."
